Now there is help for those persecuted for exercising their rights to speak, express, assemble and form association. These are rights guaranteed to all Malaysians under Article 10 of the Federal Constitution.

ENGAGE, a citizen action group, has come forward to organise Freedom Fund in the face of relentless and frivolous arrests of activists, politicians, academicians, lawyers and even cartoonists.

In the press conference to launch Freedom Fund today, Thomas Fann, chairman of ENGAGE and the Working Committee of Freedom Fund, said, “Many do not know that when a person is arrested, it is not just a matter of being reported in the news and the inconvenience of being lockup. Often times, there are great financial stresses on the persecuted and their families. And unless the public who supports freedom in this country come forward to stand in solidarity with these persecuted individuals, there is a good chance freedom will be stifled.”

Prof. Azmi Sharom, one of the Overseers of the Fund, equates the current malaise facing our country as a “Bencana Demokrasi”, a Democratic Disater and he is glad now there is a fund the public can donate into.

Former top civil servant, Tan Sri Ramon Navaratnam who is also an Overseer, said that without money it is very difficult to continue the fight for a free nation.”

Tan Sri Simon Sipaun, a Sabahan who was a former Suhakam commissioner said that Freedom Fund is a platform for the public to support these freedom fighters who dare to speak up not only for themselves but for others, indeed for all of us. They should not be alone when they are targeted by the authorities. We need to stand in support with our money, by donating to the Freedom Fund or any such funds.
100 percent of the money donated will be used to pay for bails, fines, living support for families of those imprisoned, for those who lose their jobs or scholarships. No money will be deducted for the administration of the Fund.

To ensure that the Fund is properly managed with the utmost integrity and transparency, it will be scrutinized by a Board of Overseers comprising of Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan, Puan Maria Chin Abdullah, Tan Sri Ramon Navaratnam, Tan Sri Simon Sipaun, Dato Dr Toh Kin Woon, Dato’ Noor Farida Ariffin and Prof. Azmi Sharom.
