PETALING JAYA: A second death threat was issued to Maria Chin Abdullah and her three sons via a WhatsApp message , this time featuring images of heads decapitated by Islamist State terrorists.
Apart from the quartet, similar threats were sent to Bersih 2.0 Committee Member Mandeep Singh and Human Rights Society Chairperson Ambiga Sreenevasan.
In a statement, the electoral reform group said it was “horrific” that one would stoop so low to attack human rights activists.
“It was probably done by people who do not want us to continue with our Bersih 5 rally and convoy,” it said, alluding to the Nov 19 gathering and the convoy held nationwide.
As this is the second threat in a month, Bersih 2.0 said police need to take it more seriously and arrest those behind it.
“If they can trace the mobile numbers and act swiftly in other cases, why not ours?”
They also said despite the death threats, Bersih would not be cowed and would remain resolute in calling for its demands for clean and fair elections and democratic governance.
On Oct 18, Maria received a death threat from an anonymous individual via WhatsApp regarding the Bersih 5 rally.
The threat came in an Islamic State-styled doctored image which depicted a man dressed in black holding a dagger to Maria’s neck.
Similar images were also sent to Mandeep and Ambiga.
