KUALA LUMPUR, May 5 — The Election Commission (EC) assured Malaysians not to worry about electoral fraud, saying each voter has only one MyKad which is scrutinised to prevent double voting.

EC deputy chairman Tan Sri Othman Mahmood said close scrutiny of the MyKads of advance voters who cast their vote today and regular voters who will mark their ballot papers on May 9 will be conducted to ensure there is no repeat voting, Berita Harian reported today.

“We will check each individual’s documents in detail on these two days to avoid any issue from arising. However, I am sure all voters are already mature enough to vote prudently.

“We will also ensure the ballot boxes that are monitored closely by election workers to ensure the transparency of the voting results,” he was quoted as saying.

Meanwhile, EC chairman Tan Sri Mohd Hashim Abdullah was reported as saying that the term “phantom voters” is just propaganda and does not exist.

“There are some registered voters who moved and are no longer living in the area they were registered as voters or there are voters who change the address of their constituency.

“There are also registered voters that only return to that constituency every four or five years, and the residents there no longer recognise the voters and subsequently, consider them phantom voters, when they are validly registered voters according to the law,” he was quoted as saying.
