As a member of the United Nations, Malaysia adopts:
- The United Nations Universal Declaration on Human Rights 1948 (UDHR) [Download pdf] / Perisytiharan Hak Asasi Manusia Sejagat 1948 (UDHR) [Muat-turun pdf]
Further, there are 9 core international human rights treaties, of which Malaysia has signed and ratified 3, which are:
- [4] The Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) 1979 – Ratified in 1995 with reservations (for Gender Equality, created on 18 Dec 1979);
- [6] The Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) 1989 – Ratified in 1995 with reservations (for Children’s Rights, created on 20 Nov 1989); and
- [9] The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) 2006 – Ratified in 2010, with reservations about Articles 15 and 18, but has not signed the Optional Protocols to this Convention (for Rights of the Disabled, created on 13 Dec 2006).
However, Malaysia has yet to sign onto the other 6 core international human rights treaties, which are:
- [1] International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD) 1965 (for Racial Equality, created on 21 Dec 1965);
- [2] International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) 1966 (on Civil and Political Rights, created on 16 Dec 1966);
- [3] International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR) 1966 (on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, created on 16 Dec 1966);
- [5] Convention Against Torture and other Cruel, Inhuman, or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (CAT) 1984 (on Anti-Torture, created on 10 Dec 1984);
- [7] International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of all Migrant Workers and Members of their Families (ICMW) 1990 (on Migrant Workers’ Rights, created on 18 Dec 1990); and
- [8] International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance (CPED) 2006 (against enforced disappearance, created 20 Dec 2006).

- Kuala Lumpur Declaration on the Establishment of the ASEAN Charter 2005 (created 12 Dec 2005);
- Declaration on the Elimination of Violence Against Women and Elimination of Violence Against Children in ASEAN 2013 – Adopted in 2013 (created on 9 Oct 2013); and
- ASEAN Convention Against Trafficking in Persons, Especially Women and Children 2015 [Download pdf] – Signed in 2015 but yet to ratify (created 21 Nov 2015, in force Mar 2017).
