Banker Datuk Seri Nazir Razak’s proposal for a national consultative council (NCC) to chart a new future for Malaysia has received support from members of civil societies and politicians from both sides of the divide.

The brother of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, in a speech at the Khazanah Nasional Bhd’s megatrends 2015 forum yesterday, said social and economic re-engineering was needed so that Malaysia will not “lose the international economics game”.

The CIMB Group chairman’s proposal for NCC harks back to the time when Malaysia grappled with the aftermath of race riots in May 1969 by forming such a council to help steer the country back to normalcy.

NCC had been set up by Najib and Nazir’s father, Tun Abdul Razak Hussein, who was then deputy prime minister.

Civil society leaders and politicians today gave the thumbs up to Nazir’s proposal, with some expressing optimism that this was what Malaysia needed. Read more

Despite the flak she received over her “action plan” to address the issues Malaysia is currently facing, prominent lawyer and activist Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan is determined to push for the restoration of the nation from its crises.

The action plan, which was unveiled last week, was sent to all 222 parliamentarians from both sides of the divide, with Ambiga hoping that civil society would be able to discuss these solutions with them.

Ambiga along with several other NGOs had, in their action plan, proposed that a “national government” be formed beyond party lines while asking Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak to take a leave of absence.

She had also warned that if a proper solution is not found in the near future to deal with the situation, the people would have no choice but to take to the streets to voice their displeasure.

Several lawmakers, including those from Barisan Nasional (BN), have since replied to Ambiga, who said some of their responses to the action plan shocked her.

They slammed her for allegedly colluding with opposition MPs to overthrow the current administration under Najib, she said. Read more

Introduction

The nation is in crisis. The numerous financial scandals, falling ringgit, implementation of GST, and curtailment of our fundamental freedoms have resulted in a loss of trust and public confidence in the government. Transparency and accountability are non-existent. Those exercising the levers of power are not using them for the public good. There is scant attention by the leadership to the economic crisis and the hardship faced by the people. The unbridled corruption against a background of diminishing civil and political rights, has created an environment of uncertainty and the welfare of the people does not appear to be a priority.

Therefore, in the interest of the people and the nation, we, the undersigned members of civil society, present an action plan to arrest the crisis and to restore the nation to an even keel. Read more

KUALA LUMPUR, June 17 — The amended Sedition Act that now imposes a minimum three years’ jail term is meant to “imprison” the minds of Malaysians, civil liberties lawyer Syahredzan Johan has said.

Syahredzan said the Sedition Act is actually intended to create a “chilling effect” and strike fear in Malaysians, but urged his countrymen to continue to speak out.

“And that’s enough, they have achieved their purpose. The purpose isn’t actually to detain, to have this law and use it on everyone, they won’t have resources for that, but it is to imprison your mind, to make you feel afraid,” he told a forum here last night.

“So now that we know this is enough, are we just going to keep quiet, or are we going to keep at it, keep speaking up? Because we know this is a constitutionally guaranteed fundamental liberty, the right to freedom of speech and expression and no one can take that away from us,” he said. Read more
