ACTIVISM IN THE 21st CENTURY NEEDS 21st CENTURY TOOLS.

Malaysian activists and Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) cannot go on using the traditional methods of communication that may have served us well 10 years ago – holding forums and press statements – hoping to bring about awareness on causes, and ultimately to advocate change.

For the past 15 years, HAKAM has been carrying on with its mission on human rights by relying mainly on the same methods we did when it was first established. We face the same issues now as we did 30 years ago, only in a much bigger scale and with higher frequency. How do we carry on our mission, effectively as a resource-strapped NGO? Certainly not with the same tools we had 25 years ago when HAKAM was established.

At HAKAM, we know that doing the same things expecting different results is insane. Hence, we have started building our capacity for communications through social media.

The reach we have – through a new website, Facebook page, Twitter and Pinterest accounts – is modest.

IMG_2389Our Facebook page alone has almost 1,000 likes, but that’s nothing considering a population of Malaysian Facebook users of 15 million. Nevertheless, those 1,000 likes affords our messages to potentially reach thousands every time we post. And we get to interact with our online community. That is a lot more than what we achieve with our usual physical forums.

Malaysia has 18 million registered internet users, with a high penetration on social media, in fact higher than most countries.

HAKAM’s predicament is not uncommon. Many other activists and NGOs have started turning to social media to carry out advocacy for their causes.

But are we effective and efficient in our use of social media? Do we strategise our social media campaigns and advocacy?

We need to.

We have some of the best Malaysian thinkers and advocates for change in civil society. We just need the right tools to get their thoughts across to Malaysians to reach and for them to engage with 18 million Malaysians online.

And that is why HAKAM has made the effort and had managed to engage a highly sought after digital & social media expert Ryan Lim to conduct this two-day workshop on How to Leverage on Social Media for Impactful Social Change in Malaysia.

 

Why Attend

This workshop is designed for human rights activists/defenders and CSOs who need to understand social media, and develop practical skills for impactful advocacy campaigns and developing and sustaining communities on social media. Content for this workshop has been developed from experiences and techniques used in the world’s top advertising campaigns.

This workshop will equip participants with useful strategic framework on social media used by world leaders and social change game changers, including insights to the social media campaigns of Fortune 500 companies.

Participants will be taught fundamental principles in campaign execution; content development and management; community engagement; as well as analytics. They will also learn practical skills to be able to conceptualize and execute their own social media campaigns that include ads buying and management on Facebook.

About the Trainer – Ryan Lim

Ryan Lim is the Principal Consultant and Founding Partner of QED Consulting. He has more than 15 years experience as a digital marketer and is a pioneer in social media marketing. Ryan is an advisor and strategist to senior management teams of some of the world’s leading businesses and brands with his experience on digital marketing and content strategies, digital team structures, digital reputation management, digital marketing audits, social media crisis management and social media intelligence.

Ryan founded Blugrapes in 2006 and had led his team to be recognized by Marketing Magazine as a top three social media agency since 2012 before joining QED Consulting in 2014. In 2015, he was appointed by Singapore’s Minister of Communications as a Member of the Board of Directors to the Media Development Authority to advise on national development issues pertaining digital communications. In that same year, he led QED Consulting to win Marketing Magazine’s top content marketing agency award in both local and open categories.

As an industry thought leader, Ryan is constantly sought to train marketing professionals on digital and social media. He has trained over 3,000 marketing professionals from Fortune 500 companies, government organizations and non-profit organizations across the ASEAN region. As course developer for leading tertiary institutions, Ryan often lectures at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore Management University, Singapore Institute of Management, Aventis School of Management and Republic Polytechnic.
