Suara Rakyat Malaysia (SUARAM) welcomes the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention’s stance on the detention of Anwar Ibrahim and fully supports the call for the Government of Malaysia to release Anwar Ibrahim and the reinstate all of his political rights that was denied following his conviction.
Arbitrary detention of any individual should not be the norm of any states and government irrespective of their political ideology and must not be the tool for government to suppress political dissidence. The idea where a person’s right to liberty and security of person can be compromised thus based on the whim of those in power is highly unconscionable and must be condemned and stopped whenever possible. Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has been ordered to file an affidavit in response to the home minister’s ban on yellow Bersih 4 t-shirts and other printed materials, which was gazetted two days before the 34-hour rally in late August.
Lawyer New Sin Yew said High Court senior assistant registrar P. Sarulatha instructed that the affidavit must be filed by November 23.
“If the need arises, we have been given one week to file an affidavit in reply to the home minister,” he told The Malaysian Insider after a case management before Sarulatha in Shah Alam today. Read more

PUTRAJAYA, Nov 2 — Acknowledging its porous borders, the Home Ministry announced today the set-up of a new agency to guard the country’s entry and exit points in an effort to deal with the rise of a growing smuggling industry that has racked up losses of RM5 billion worth of subsidised goods to date.
Announcing the move today, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the agency will be manned by some 10,000 officials who will be taken from the armed forces, the general operation force of the police and the Smuggling Prevention Unit (UPP).
“We will begin the smuggling control, as well as [the issues of] illegal immigrants and human trafficking, which will be handled by this agency,” he said in a news conference after a high level committee meeting here. Read more

Kumpulan pembaharuan pilihan raya (Bersih 2.0) berhasrat menemui Speaker Dewan Rakyat Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia bagi menggesa beliau membenarkan usul undi tidak percaya ke atas perdana menteri dibahas dan pengundian dijalankan.
Bersih hari ini menghantar surat kepada speaker di Parlimen dan memohon satu perjumpaan dengan beliau, susulan kenyataan Pandikar yang mengatakan usul tersebut hanya akan dibincang pada sidang Dewan tahun depan.
“Kami berada di sini untuk menghantar surat kepada Pandikar untuk bertemu beliau dan berbincang mengenai undi tidak percaya ke atas Datuk Seri Najib Razak.
“Kami mahu pujuk beliau supaya usul ini diluluskan dan untuk ahli Parlimen mengundinya,” kata Pengerusi Bersih 2.0 Maria Chin Abdullah di lobi Parlimen selepas mereka menghantar poskad dan surat atas talian kepada wakil rakyat pembangkang pagi ini. Read more
