Putrajaya dijangka akan membentangkan di Parlimen cadangan pindaan undang-undang bagi memansuhkan hukuman mati mandatori atas salah laku membabitkan dadah ketika sidang Dewan Rakyat pada Mac tahun hadapan, kata Menteri di Jabatan Perdana Menteri Nancy Shukry.

Katanya, keputusan itu diambil selepas persetujuan daripada Peguam Negara Tan Sri Mohamed Apandi Ali.

“Saya sudah bincang dengan AG (peguam negara) dan beliau bersetuju.

“Saya harap ia boleh dibentangkan dalam sidang tahun depan pada Mac,” kata Nancy pada sidang media di lobi Parlimen selepas mesyuarat Parliamentary for Global Action (PGA) berkenaan “Parliamentary Rountable on the Abolition of the Death Penalty in Malaysia”.  Read more

TPPA will affect medicine prices, says expert

KUALA LUMPUR: Critics of the controversial Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPPA) have rebutted claims by TPPA supporters that the agreement will not have an effect on medicine prices.

Policy Manager for the Malaysian AIDS Council Fifa Rahman said studies in Jordan and Thailand, which run along the same parallel lines economically as Malaysia, have all found that the provisions similar to those in their agreements led to an overall increase in cost of medicines.

“There are a lot of studies that have debunked what the pro-TPPA people are saying, these studies are done by international and legitimate medical bodies,” she said. Read more

GLCs fund politicians, parties via CSR activities, says Putrajaya

Government-linked companies (GLC) and Finance Ministry Incorporated vehicles have channelled funds to politicians and political parties through corporate social responsibility (CSR) programmes, Putrajaya says.

These included financial aid for the funding of certain community activities, such as supporting sports day at schools, helping flood victims, buka puasa events and Hari Raya contributions to orphans, single mothers, the disabled and more.

“The total amount of contributions every year depends on the number of applications received and the ability of the companies’ finances to prepare allocations for CRS programmes,” Finance Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said in a parliamentary reply. Read more

Pihak berkepentingan mempersoalkan seksyen berkaitan penggajian pekerja asing dalam Perjanjian Perkongsian Trans-Pasifik (TPPA) yang menimbulkan kebimbangan mereka kerana ia meletakkan beberapa keperluan yang harus dipenuhi majikan yang menggunakan buruh asing.

Perjanjian antara 12 negara itu yang dijangka akan disahkan pada awal tahun depan, mengandungi bab berkaitan buruh, bertujuan menangani isu Malaysia dalam penyeludupan manusia.

Ia termasuk meletakkan beberapa syarat seperti majikan tidak dibenarkan memegang pasport pekerja, levi perlu dibayar majikan dan juga hak menubuhkan sesebuah kesatuan.

Namun, Persatuan Majikan Amah Malaysia (Mama) dan Persatuan Agensi Pembantu Rumah Asing (Papa) berkata pengambilan pekerja domestik sudah pun dilindungi dalam perjanjian 2 hala antara kedua-dua negara. Read more
