PETALING JAYA: Suara Rakyat Malaysia (Suaram) has decried the death of Azri Mohamed, who died while in custody, allegedly from being beaten while in the Pengkalan Chepa prison.

It was earlier reported that the 27-year-old had been rushed to Hospital Raja Perempuan Zainab II’s Intensive Care Unit on Aug 15 and had lapsed into a coma after undergoing surgery.

He was pronounced dead on Wednesday morning.

“Suaram was deeply concerned when it was informed by the family of the victim that although he was beaten until his health reached a critical condition, there has yet to be any investigation by the relevant authorities,” said Suaram’s executive director Sevan Doraisamy in a statement on Wednesday.

Sevan said that the use of violence against prisoners not only contravened Malaysian law but also international law and the Inspector-General of Police’s Standing Orders (IGSO).

He said that Suaram demanded that the cause of the Azmi’s death be immediately investigated in transparent and serious manner.

“Death in custody is far more cruel than the death penalty, where the offender sentenced to death has been tried and proven guilty,” said Sevan.

It was reported that Azmi’s sister, Norsyazmira, had said that medical staff had informed her that her brother needed his ruptured intestines removed and that it was likely due to having been beaten.

She said her brother had confided in her, during one of her visits, that he had been beaten but did not reveal by whom.

PETALING JAYA: Human rights group Suaram has claimed yet another person has died after being sent to prison.

It said the latest involved the death of 27-year-old Azri Mohamed at the Pengkalan Chepa Prison, Kelantan.

Azri was reportedly brought into the intensive care unit of the Raja Perempuan Zainab II Hospital in critical condition on Aug 15 and passed away at 7.45am this morning.

Suaram Executive Director Sevan Doraisamy claimed there had been no investigation and the hospital had tried to obstruct the autopsy process.

Malaysiakini reported that Sevan said the use of force against detainees was against the law.

Sevan called for investigations into Azri’s death to be conducted in a transparent manner.

On Aug 18, Sinar Harian reported that the youth was sent to prison on July 14.

The daily also reported that Azri told his sister, Norsyazmira, who visited him on Aug 10, that he had been beaten but did not state who had done so.

Azri was taken to hospital after he complained of chest and abdominal pains. It is believed his intestines had ruptured.

The report also said prison officials promised to investigate the matter if their personnel were found to be involved.

Azri was earlier charged under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for possession of drugs.
