PETALING JAYA: The opposition and civil society must continue to file suits to reveal the shortcomings of the government, lawyer Ambiga Sreenevasan said.

She said this was also to create awareness among the people on the issues at hand.

“Even if we lose, the evidence will come out,” she said at the “Save Malaysia” roundtable conference, initiated by DAP, held at a private club here.

However, there were times litigants had won their cases against the government.

The prominent civil lawyer said they should also look for other counsel to take up their cases.

Ambiga said at the moment it was the same group of lawyers who appeared when filing court action for the opposition and individuals.

Ambiga, who is former chairman of electoral reform group Bersih, said all should concentrate on the 14th general election and ensure the polls were free and fair.

“All must be engaged in the polls. Cheating does not occur on election day alone.”

Several lawsuits have been filed against the Election Commission, the most notable by the Selangor government, following its proposal to redraw election boundaries.

Ambiga said the opposition needs to rise to the occasion and convince the people they can do a better job administering the country.

“You must show that you can form a government that can serve all the people.”

She said open quarrels among opposition members should be averted.

Ambiga said the opposition must let the people know it intends to recover all money that has left the country, tackle the 1 Malaysia Development Berhad issue and handle all present government’s business dealings with China.
