Gender Equality and Related Issues – Talk by Justice Prabha Sridevan [Updated]

The Bar Council Human Rights Committee is organising a talk by Justice Prabha Sridevan entitled “Gender Equality and Related Issues”.
Time: 4:00 pm to 5:30 pm (Registration begins at 3:30 pm)

About the Speaker:
Justice Prabha Sridevan was a Judge of the Madras High Court from 2 Mar 2000 to 8 Aug 2010. Justice Prabha Sridevan has vast experience in dealing with cases relating to freedom of speech; child rights; gender equality; disability rights, mental health; rights of the depressed classes and Dalits; right to education; right to information; and worth of a homemaker’s work. Justice Prabha Sridevan was also awarded the “Justice Shivaraj V. Patil Award for Service to Humanity”.
The papers presented by Justice Prabha Sridevan, and conferences in which she has participated, include:
- Presentation of paper on “Justice Systems and Human Rights with Special Reference to Dalits” at the Inter-Regional Conference held on 18 to 20 Sept 2006 in Brazil;
- “Women’s Access to Justice in the World” at the International Convention of Elected Women and Equal Opportunities, organised in Turin, Italy in March 2004; and
- “Access to Equity and Justice” at the International Policy Dialogue on “Strengthening Human and Women’s Rights — Key to Realizing the Millennium Development Goals”, conducted by the Development Policy Forum of InWENT, held in Berlin, Germany in April 2005.
At this talk, Justice Prabha Sridevan will speak about the approach taken by India in handling the issue of gender equality, and will also share the steps taken by the courts to address and tackle the issue of discrimination against women. The talk will focus on the efforts taken by the courts to improve legal literacy among women, and to enhance their access to justice. Participants will gain an insight on the challenges faced by Justice Prabha Sridevan in the course of delivering judgments in furtherance of gender equality and women’s access to justice.
