International Women’s Day 2017: Women’s Work
March 11, 2017 @ 11:00 - 18:00Free
In conjunction with this year’s International Women’s Day (March 8), Gerakbudaya, Sisters In Islam, All Women’s Action Society (AWAM) and Persatuan Kesedaran Komuniti Selangor (EMPOWER) are organizing a day-long series of events to celebrate and explore the roles, duties, responsibilities, contributions, joys and agonies of Malaysian women, along with the obstacles and challenges they presently face.
The theme of the event is ‘Women’s Work’, which can be interpreted broadly across various contexts. The event will consist of three activities that will take place at Rumah Gerakbudaya on 11 March 2017 (Saturday):
(1) Public lecture by Suri Kempe: 11 am – 1 pm
(2) Lunch: 1 – 2 pm
(3) Panel Discussion: 2 – 4 pm
Paying Their Dues: The Missing Women in Malaysia’s Story
Unpaid, unrecognised, uncounted – for every individual woman given accolades on International Women’s Day and Hari Wanita Kebangsaan, many more are missing from our country’s narratives. Some – like the late Khadijah Sidek and Shamsiah Fakeh – were deliberately marginalised for asking “too much” or demanding the “wrong” rights. Some were women whose labour was not counted as work – women in the informal sector, sex workers, and domestic workers – or contended with a society that saw their gender and sexual expression as deviant. Some were deemed too unimportant for visibility, like the clerical staff who ran the offices of the captains of industry.
This panel teases out overlooked narratives of historical contribution, labour, leadership, and courage; and offers a way forward to finally pay our women their dues.
(4) Literary showcase/ open mike session: 4.30 – 6.00 pm
