UndiMsia!Chats – Online Obscenity Is in the Eye of the Beholder?
August 5, 2017 @ 11:00 - 13:00Free
What is considered as “obscene” can vary from society to society and even from person to person. Often times, cyber harassment crosses the line of “obscenity” when it involves lewd comments and non-consensual disclosure of sexual images and videos. But what is “obscenity” to a reasonable person living in Malaysia?
The panel includes Dr. Surinderpal Kaur, a linguistic expert from Universiti Malaya and Mr. Mohd Mustaffa Fazil, the Executive Director of Communications and Multimedia Content Forum (CMCF). Join them in this third of a five-part UndiMsia!Chat series on the issue of cyber harassment, where they debate on what is the definition of “obscenity” and whether the current laws prohibiting obscene publications are sufficient to tackle cyber harassment and other harmful cyber behavior.
You are also strongly encouraged to attend the remaining two chats on the following issues:
Series #4 (12 Aug, 11am – 12.30pm) – Is the current Penal Code sufficient in addressing threats of death and rape and other abusive communications made online?
Series #5 (19 Aug, 11am – 12.30pm) – Is the current law sufficient to deal with the offence of online breach of privacy?
PeopleACT is an UndiMsia! intiative. It is run by a group of human rights defenders from different non-profit organisations in Malaysia. Its mission is to make the cyber environment a safer, more respectful and empowering space for Malaysians through strategic legislative advocacy and public awareness campaign.
