No room for religious policing here, say more Malaysians in support of Malay rulers

THE concerns raised by the Malay rulers on the country’s unity and harmony are timely as there is no place for religious policing in a multicultural society, influential leaders and civil society groups said.

They were responding to the statement issued by the Malay rulers yesterday, who endorsed the Johor Sultan and Perlis Raja Muda’s decision to forbid Muslim-only launderettes in their respective states.

The rulers also expressed their concerns that recent actions in the name of Islam threatened the harmony and unity of Malaysia’s multicultural people. Read more

Rulers want NSC bill refined, #TakNakDiktator reminds gov’t

The #TakNakDiktator campaign coalition today reminded the government to honour the Conference of Rulers’ call for the National Security Council (NSC) bill to be refined.

Their statement comes ahead of the next Parliament session which begins on Monday.

Speaking on behalf of the group, former Bar president Ambiga Sreenevasan also thanked the Malay rulers for not signing off on the bill as yet.

“We note that according to the federal gazette, the Yang Di Pertuan Agong has not yet given his royal assent to the NSC Bill even though it has been over two months since the bill was passed by the Dewan Negara.

“We welcome the prudence of the Conference of Rulers to uphold the separation of powers that is essential to preserving democracy in Malaysia,” she said in a statement today. Read more

Pakar Perlembagaan negara, Prof Emeritus Datuk Dr Shad Salem Faruqi UITM Shah Alam pada 5 hb Disember 2015 mencadangkan pindaan dilakukan Jawatan Kuasa Dewan Rakyat dan Dewan Negara ke atas Rang Undang-undang Majlis Keselamatan Negara 2015 (RUU MKN 2015). Peranan Dewan Negara dan Dewan Rakyat sebenarnya masih ada sepertimana yang termaktub di bawah Perlembagaan Persekutuan.

“Dewan Negara tidak perlu menolak rang undang-undang itu, sebaliknya boleh cadangkan sedikit pindaan dan perubahan dalam mesyuarat Jawatankuasa Dewan Rakyat dan Dewan Negara. Lagi pun ia belum menjadi undang-undang, sebaliknya hanya cadangan,”

Harus juga diingat di sini yang sesuatu RUU tidak akan menjadi akta selagi ianya tidak diperkenan dan selagi ianya belum diwartakan, justeru untuk merujuknya sebagai akta amatlah, “misleading” bila proses menjadikan akta masih lagi agak jauh. Read more
